Replacement of the Scugnizzo’s monument

Project and implementation phase: Consorzio R.O.M.A – dott. Giuseppe Giordano, dott. Arch. Giuseppe Albano – external consultancy and support to the executive phase of the company, Studio Cavuoto – Executive design and works management of reinforced concrete and steel works.

Period: 2019 – 2022

The Scugnizzo’s monument, built in the 60s,it was the result of the competition won by Marino Mazzacurati. It was born with the purpose of commemorating the heroic deeds of the Four Days of Naples. The work conceived as four stelae composed of assembled blocks that rest on a base composed of four levels of different heights, all using the Lazio ignimbrite. The monument opened in 1969, has suffered over time the degrading action of salt due to the proximity to the coast; the smog that has hidden the original color; the original assembly materials consisting of easily oxidizable mild steel and poorly suitable cements resulting in a diffuse cracking framework. Unstable static conditions were also tested during the 1980 earthquake. In the 2000s the Mazzacurati monument became the pivot of the project of the new Arco Mirelli station of Line 6 signed by Hans Kolloff and for the occasion it was finally dismantled block by block by the company of restoration of artistic heritage Consortium R.O.M.A that has curated a first phase the cataloging and the storage of the single pieces near the warehouse of Piazzale Tecchio. In 2019 work resumed at the warehouse with the cleaning of old mortars, oxidized steel and other that could damage the texture of the stone now fragile. This first phase was followed by the consolidation of the blocks and the cleaning of the surfaces in order to recover the original pink colours. In the meantime, as work progresses at the original site, the new reinforced concrete base is built, designed by Studio Cavuoto that involves the use of seismic insulators. In the following months the individual stems are raised, blocked by a new stainless steel frame to prevent any overturning phenomena.
